Our Active Planet

Using Slinkies, students are shown how seismologists can pinpoint the epicentre of an earthquake. Why do some buildings stay up in an earthquake whilst others collapse? A scaled model of two apartment blocks show the result of having weak foundations.
If only we could warn people living near fault lines when an earthquake is likely to happen. With a nail-biting demonstration, we show that even party poppers do not perfom predictably.
If it isn't earthquakes, then floods and tsunamis move huge amounts of material in seconds. Children can create beach defences on a small scale and witness how they work.
